Charming Antique Black Forest Figural Inkwell by Maison F. Mack C.1890

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A fabulous and most charming figural Swiss Black Forest hand carved inkwell in the from of a dog. When you look at the back, you can see how it has been carved out of a piece of wood with a few pieces of the original bark showing.

The dog sports his original amber glass eyes and there is a hole either side of his mouth to house a small dip pen which is slid in and out. The modest pen is included and fits well for display. The little brass catch at the front of his collar keeps the lid (the head) shut.

The underside is lucky enough to have retained most of the original label showing it was purchased from Maison F. Mack of Montreux.

Dating to around 1890, he remains in excellent condition. 4 1/4" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Black Forest carving originated primarily in Switzerland during the 19th century, renowned for intricate hand-carved depictions of wildlife, dogs, and foliage, often fashioned into functional household objects.

These items are typically hand-carved from native dense hardwoods such as linden or walnut, frequently featuring inset glass eyes and internal brass or terracotta ink reservoirs.

Authentic period pieces display detailed hand-chiselled surface texture, natural age-related patina, glass eyes set from behind with plaster, and occasionally stamped maker marks.

Place the item on a study writing desk, library shelf, or console table alongside leather-bound volumes and brass accessories to add texture and character to a room.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish annually, and position away from direct sunlight or radiators to prevent the timber from drying and splitting.
