Rare Antique English Figural Pounce Pot - Dog - C.1870

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A wonderfully charming Victorian novelty pounce pot, perfect for the desk top of you canine lovers. Pounce ultimately derives from the Latin for pumice via the old French word "ponce". It is a fine powder, most often made from powdered cuttlefish bone that was used both to dry ink and to sprinkle on a rough writing surface to make it smooth enough for writing.

This example is made in the form of dog, handsomely dressed with a cap, collar and bow tie. Made from silver plate, the patina has been left in it's antique form, untouched with some wear to the plate which is how it should remain. Standing on little bun feet, the underside is where the makers marks can be found, I have been unable to desipher as yet. There is a screw opening to re-fill with pounce.

Dating to around 1870, this exquisite example remains in excellent antique condition. 4 1/2" in height.
