Rare Urn-shaped "Fruit" Tea Caddy

Description

A pretty and rare early 19th century fruitwood TEA CADDY in the shape of an urn.

The moulded dome-shaped lid features a finial in the form of a pear with laurel-leaf decoration around the outside, whilst the body is decorated with leaves and flowers with similar decoration around the circular plinth base. The top opens to reveal much of the original lead lining and it is complete with its original key.

*This is very closely related to the group of "fruit" tea caddies, which were made in Northern Europe, particularly Bavaria in the first couple of decades of the 19th century.
