M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
. The figure stands upon a naturalistically modelled base against a rocky outcrop background . Of good scale with a worn grey paint finish in imitation of lead , some minor old repairs .

Flat-backed and flat right-hand side , probably conceived to stand in a hall-way or stair-way niche.
Figures of this type were produced in demand for classically-inspired decorative schemes and manufactured by firms such as the Italian-born Domenico Brucciani & Co. of London. Such figures were taken from marble works of Greek and Roman antiquity , and were regarded as essential requisites for the cultured interiors of well-travelled and educated gentlemen .
The 'Cast Courts' of the Victorian and Albert Museum , London , hold a vast and varied collection and examples of this type of art form .
