Circle Thomas Sidney Cooper 1803-1902 Cattle and Sheep on Canterbury Marshes

19th century
Description

Circle of Thomas Sidney Cooper 1803 - 1902

This is finely painted mid 19th C study of a group of cattle and a single sheep by a pupil or follower of Thomas Sidney Cooper. Cooper was a true master at capturing the atmosphere of the marsh and the true personality of the cattle and sheep he painted.

This piece has all of Coopers hallmarks throughout the painting. The cattle and sheep are painted in exceptional detail; the landscape is open and the church on the horizon features in many of Coopers works. The cattle and sheep group is a famous Cooper grouping.

Cooper lived to the ripe old age of 99. At twenty he left Category for a period to train at the Royal Academy, where he went on to exhibit regularly. However he returned to Canterbury and continued painting animals in the local landscapes. He was known to take the guinea and not sign if the work was not by him!

The painting is listed as circle of as it is by a pupil or follower. It is a 19th century piece of art and many artists and pupils used other artists works as a way of developing their own skills.
