Silver Fusee Pocket Watch Johnson, Sheffield, 1865

An antique silver fusee pocket watch by Johnson of Sheffield.

The watch has a fusee (chain driven) movement which is working nicely and the time keeping is good to within around two minutes over 24 hours. A winding key is included. Originally there probably would have been a separate inner cover which sat over the movement but this has gone missing over the years. The movement is signed Johnson, 12 Campo Lane, Sheffield.

The watch measures just over 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London 1865 together with a maker’s mark for the Coventry based watch case maker Joseph Sharpe. The case is in good condition with just the expected rubbing to the engine turned detail to the back. There are some faint initials in the cartouche.

The watch glass has small marks across it.

The enamel dial looks good to the naked eye. If viewed through a jeweller’s loupe, there is either a very faint hairline crack or a line running from number 9 to the middle. There is a short hairline right on the edge of the dial, hidden by the bezel.
