Portrait of a Boy in Red C. 1740: British School.

18th century
Description

Oil on canvas, later mounted on board, in a period carved and giltwood frame.

This portrait would have been painted by one of the self-taught itinerant artists who travelled the country getting commissions as they went.

Their portraits often have a direct and intimate quality and this is displayed here.

The sitter, a member of the county gentry, regards us with rather a knowing look as he points to the flowers on his left. Flowers in portraiture nearly always refer to the transience of life whilst also meaning youth and fruitfulness.

Here the sitter points especially at a variegated tulip which can symbolise 'beautiful eyes' but also can be a symbol of the vanity of the things of this world, and thus act as a religious 'memento mori'.

SIZE:31.5 x 27.5 inches inc. frame.

PROVENANCE: Sussex Private Collection.

Bought and sold by Roy Precious Fine Art in 1993.

Private Collection, County Durham.
