Description

Henri Joseph Harpignies 1819-1916 was a key member of the Barbizon School this is the name given to a community of mid-19th-century painters who worked in and around the village of Barbizon in the forest of Fontainebleau, south-east of Paris. They painted landscapes and scenes of rural life, occasionally working in the open air. In this respect they were important precursors of the Impressionist. The picture is a wonderful grazing scene showing all the characteristics of the Barbizon School. The Barbizon School took their lead from the Suffolk artist John Constable, who was painting from life landscapes.
Harpignies exhibited extensively including the Salon in Paris. He hangs extensively in both UK and French galleries.
The painting is of a lake probably in the south of France in moonlight. It's black and grey ink. Signed bottom right.
