Thomas Hill of Fleet Street London Circa 1780

Description

A fine quality George III flame mahogany longcase clock by Thomas Hill of Fleet Street London c.1780

Maker: Thomas Hill, 18 Fleet Street, London 1780 -1784

Date: 1780

Height: 7ft 8” Width: 19” Depth: 9.5”

Provenance: Hillborough Hall, Thetford, Norfolk

The high quality case very much in the style of Thomas Mudge/ John Holmes, veneered in beautifully figured flame mahogany, with a solid oak carcass. The break arch hood surmounted by a single pedestal with gilded wooden ball finial, below canted stop fluted corners. The hood sides with intricately worked rectangular sound frets. The razor edge moulded long trunk door with curled mahogany veneers. Raised panel to the base with London style double plinth.

The twelve inch break arch silvered brass dial signed Thomas Hill, Fleet Street London, to the centre. Having a subsidiary strike/silent dial to the arch, subsidiary seconds dial and calendar dial above VI.

The high quality movement is of eight day duration, the shouldered plates united by five knopped pillars, anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a single bell, with strike silent facility.

The original brass cased lead weights and brass bob pendulum with brass strap

Finely fretted blued steel hands of serpentine design.
