Railway Gas Lantern

1900 - 1920
Description

Circa 1900-1930 this is an original, large, Railway gas lantern, recently converted to electricity, and rewired to UK specifications by our electrician. It's a real collectors piece.

It has all the original parts, including a clear glass shade with a tiny, deliberately designed small hole at the base to allow the heat from the gas to escape, and this can just about be seen in the main photo.

The light measures: 67cm in length from the hook at the top to the very base of the light shade; the enamelled shade is 40cm wide; the steel handles holding the 'on/off' chain is 31cm wide and the glass shade is approximately 17cm in length.

The shade is held in place by the green and white enamelled rim that has solid brass clips to open it and allow the shade to be slid through and held safely.

The original 'on/off' chains are still in place, and our electrician has soldered the central bar that used to control the gas flow into position, to protect the new electric cable. The light now takes a single standard bayonet lightbulb.

There are very similar (but no so detailed) reproduction lights like this on the market for £525-£600. This is a genuinely old one.

The light can be viewed in Surrey by appointment as we no longer sell through a retail outlet, or quotes can be given for delivery. If the buyer is within easy reach of the M25 south side, then we may be able to deliver it ourselves.

For overseas buyers, we suggest we have a purpose made crate built to protect it during transit, and will be happy to discuss this with you. Please contact us at lancasterantiques@ymail.com. Thank you.
