Rosewood Flower or 'Crocus' Table by Gillows

Description

GILLOWS of LANCASTER: a good early/mid 19th century figured rosewood CROCUS or FLOWER TABLE by Gillows, in lovely original condition.

I am a great admirer of these beautiful rare pieces by the "Master" ~ ostensibly this a wine or 'occasional' table, but when required the top panel is removed there is revealed the original zinc-lined tray below in which crocus bulbs would remain dormant planted in shallow earth. Two weeks before an important party or ball, the top would be removed; the bulbs would be watered, so that they would bloom in time for the important day.

It is supported on a highly detailed and carved column leading to carved cabriole legs and scrolled feet. Lovely original condition and of a beautiful colour and patina.
