Bell clocks are unusual, but to find a bell clock set is very rare. This one is heavily cast in brass and is profusely decorated. The clock features Christian symbolism in fragments from the Lord's Prayer in Latin, a bold brass handle and it sits on feet in the form of mythical creatures. Candelabra are in the form of the Evangelist bell with four winged creatures: Matheus – The winged man represents Matthew, because his gospel narrative traces Jesus’ human genealogy. Marcus – The winged lion. This is the symbol of Mark (and also Venice), because his gospel narrative begins with the voice of one crying in the wilderness, and this suggests the roar of a lion. Lucas – The winged creature with the head of an ox is the symbol of Luke; the animal of sacrifice stresses the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Johannes – the winged creature with the head of the eagle. This is the emblem of John because in his narrative, he rises to the loftiest heights, in dealing with the mind of Christ. Four light candelabra are held above the bell by well sculptured hands. Each arm is in the form of a mythical creature, hanging on by its tail and holding the sconce in its mouth.

The dial is enamel on copper with a cast brass centre and is complete with original blued steel hands.

The French movement is of very good quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum and the gong sound board had been replaced. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a coiled gong. Click the movie below to see this actual clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent with clean and bright finish and there are no losses. There is some wear and some marks to the surface of the brass. One nozzle insert has an old repair and one drip pan has been replaced at some time. The dial has some slight chipping around the winding holes and some slight hairlining.

Complete with pendulum and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
