Description

Large and Magnificent Clock Set

by A. D. Mougin

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition ~~

A stunning classical clock set of large and impressive proportions. The clock itself is of 'drum head' shape with a particularly large enamel dial mounted on a waisted support of bold acanthus scrolls. These are mounted on a heavy, square base. A classical handled urn is mounted on the top of the case and to the sides are lions masks with laurel swag ring handles. Fretted panels are backed with red velvet. Candelabra are similarly designed and mounted with 5 light candelabra.

The dial is enamel on copper and has a Roman hour ring with an Arabic minute ring. It is fitted with the original fretted gilt brass hands and covered by a convex, bevelled glass mounted in a heavy hobnail bezel.

The set is of very good quality with crisp, sharp and finely detailed modelling and the brass has a lovely clean and bright finish. This is a heavy and well made clock set.

The movement is of excellent quality and is by the famous Paris maker A D Mougin. It runs for 8 days and strikes half-hourly on a bell. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker and is complete with a replacement pendulum and bell. See the video clip below to see this actual clock working!

Condition of the case is excellent with a bright and clean finish, some minor wear on the high spots. Dial is also in excellent condition with just some very very minor chipping around the Brocot shaft at the 12 o'clock position and one or two minor hairlines. The candelabra arms are very slightly distorted and there is an old repair to one arm. The set looks stunning as you can see in the pictures below!

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

A very large and impressive clock set, ready to display!
