After Ethelyn C Stewart, Signed Print of Magnolias 1945

1920 - 1940
Description

A Art Nouveau picture of Magnolias done by the artist Ethelyn Cosby Stewart, signed and dated. Highly decorative. Published Frost And Reed, London 1946 in original frame with small chips to corners (unseen) thats all.

Ethelyn Cosby Stewart was born in Arlington, New Jersey in 1900. Stewart studied art in New York and graduated with special honours, being the only student permitted to hold a one-woman show. For the following few years she designed textiles, worked in batik, and created lampshades before joining the staff of a New York gallery devoted to ancient and modern works of art and fine lighting.

Stewart, who is extremely well-known for her etchings, invented a process for printing copper plate etchings on soft material which could be used for lampshade decoration. Her talent for interior design was so highly thought of by the National Academy of Design that for several consecutive years she was invited to show her work in the institution’s print room.

During the 1920s, when batik designs were popular, Stewart’s work became highly sought after and celebrated. Examples of all types of Stewart’s work (batik, oil painting and etching) can now be found in many national museums of the USA including the Metropolitan Museum, the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy and the Art Alliance.

Ethelyn Cosby Stewart died in 1972.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
