Original Antique Painted Chest on Chest - Tallboy

1900 - 1920
Description

This is not the sort of item I normally sell & I am often very critical of some of these re-painted items of furniture. However, this particular piece looks like it has the original paintwork & silver gilt decoration. It's all very subtle & not in your face. I haven't had a thing done to it since we took it out of a Kensington residence. I would say it dates from around the 1920-30's period & was originally made like this. It's a kind of pale green with relief work, carvings & beadings that are silver gilt. These are naturally aged, so you can see the reddish undercoat coming through. The graduated drawers are finely dovetailed, plus they have the original silvered metal handles & escutcheons. There is also some lovely painted decoration on the sides & on the top. There are one or two old markings mainly on the top, but this piece has bags of character & has not been faked.

Height - 60.3", 153 cm
