A Stunning Quality Marquetry Inlaid Carleton House Desk by Druce & Co

1900 - 1920
Description

A stunning quality marquetry inlaid Sheraton Revival Carlton House desk by Druce & Co. London. The upper section with a raised galleried top profusely inlaid with exotic inlays and pen-work detail and an arrangement of mahogany lined drawers flanked by cupboards again with marquetry and pen-work inlaid detail. Each corner has an unusual curved "post box" and a concave shaped drawer. The serpentine shaped ends lifting to reveal beautifully fitted interiors for stationery, inkwells and pens etc. The lower section with a mahogany top, cross banded in satinwood and with a rectangular green leather writing inset. The twin rectangular oak lined frieze drawers with traditional brass swan neck handles, again with marquetry and pen-work inlaid detail. The sides and reverse of the desk are also in mahogany with classical marquetry and pen-work inlay. Supported on square tapering supports with spade feet and brass castors. Made by Druce & Co. London. This is a rare example of a Classical English Carlton House desk which was made to be freestanding in a library or drawing room. English circa 1900

Dimensions: 41" high x 49" wide x 24" deep (knee hole 23" high)

Druce & Co were founded by Thomas Charles Druce around 1840, and traded from 68 Baker Street, Portman Square. The premises were also informally known as “the Baker Street Bazaar”, the site originally being the home of a horse bazaar which extended to carriages and other goods in the 1830s. Druce & Co. were both cabinet makers and retailers of second hand furniture; in the Marylebone Trade Directory of 1853 they are described as '' Furnishers, Upholsterers and Upholders for Clients of Discernment.’

Following the death of T. C. Druce in 1864 the business was taken over and run by his son Herbert until 1913.

Condition: This carlton house desk is in stunning condition, re-polished in our workshops. Replacement leather inset.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
