Antique Silver Coventry Chronograph Pocket Watch

Antique centre seconds chronograph pocket watch and chain.

The movement is a key-winding movement with the logo for Coventry Cooperative Watch Manufacturing Society Ltd together with the number 55570.

In 1876 a group of prominent, traditional Coventry watchmakers set up a cooperative to combat the growing competition from America and Switzerland, with a trademark registered in November of that year, being a Maltese Cross with the monogram CCWMS entwined. The majority of movement frames were supplied to them by John Wycherley which would indicate a company finishing watch movements rather than making them from scratch.

This particular movement is ticking away strongly and is keeping good time to within around two minutes over 24 hours. A winding key is included. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 54mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver, with rose gold detail, and there are hallmarks inside both of the back covers for Chester 1899 with a case maker’s mark for the Coventry silversmith Ward & Francis. The case is in lovely condition for its age with just the odd minor mark. There is a cartouche to the back with the initials JW.

The watch glass is in lovely condition.

The off-white dial is signed Centre Seconds, 55570, Adjusted. It is in very good condition with original hands - the hour and minute hands are initially set by way of the pin set mechanism. The chronograph is operated by sliding the button on the side.

The watch comes with an antique silver chain … each chain measures 25cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. The chain is hallmarked for 1908.
