Georgian Wheel Barometer by J Sutton of Lincoln Inn Fields, London

19th century
Description

A fine quality fully restored mahogany mercurial wheel barometer by J Sutton of Great Queen Street, Lincoln Inn Fields, London, dated October 1805.

The beautifully proportioned architectural pediment case constructed of the finest quality mahogany, with ebony and boxwood stringing to the outer edge.

Wonderful shape to the case with fine original finish, colour and patina.

The beautifully engraved 8" diameter silvered brass dial calibrated from 28" to 31" with weather indications, signed to the dial centre "J Sutton" with engraved swag beneath with the makers address "Great Queen Street, Lincoln Inn Fields."

The barometer reading is indicated by a blued steel hand and can be recorded with a brass set hand, operated by the original turned ivory knob.

The dial enclosed within a heavy cast brass bezel and original convex glass.

The silvered brass temperature scale is calibrated from 0º to 120º Fahrenheit, with a fine mercury thermometer.

The barometer is in fine original condition and is in perfect working order, accurately measuring changes in weather patterns as a result of changes in atmospeheric pressure.

The mechanism has been expertly cleaned and overhauled, with the glass tube thoroughly cleaned and the mercury within cleaned by triple filtration.

An excellent example of a beautifully proportioned early wheel barometer of the highest quality.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
