An Unusual Late Victorian Rosewood and Inlaid Aneroid Barometer

19th century
Description

An extremely fine and unusual late Victorian rosewood and inlaid aneroid barometer in fully restored and working condition.

The fine quality rosewood case of good proportions profusely decorated with satinwood, boxwood and ivory marquetry work, further detailed with pen and ink.

The scenes depicting neo-classical ladies sporting a parasol and a games racquet, possibly an early form of tennis racket, further decoration beneath the dial with two flower laden horns.

The outer edges of the case with raised carved decoration and a fine quality gadrooned base.

The swan-neck pediment above an inlaid frieze with twin doric columns flanking a bevel edged glazed front rectangular chamber housing a decorative swirled bulb mercury thermometer, with a silvered and engraved scale showing Centigrade and Farenheit.

The 6", circular, engraved silvered register dial with Roman numerals with further decoration to the dial centre.

Heavy quality cast brass bezel with beveled edge glass, brass set hand and blued steel indicator hand.

The barometer has been fully cleaned and serviced and is fuctioning very accurately.

The case has a wonderful original finish of good colour and patina.

The quality of case work is very much in the manner of the high quality cabinet makers Edwards & Roberts.

Edwards & Roberts were founded in 1845 and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London, by 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street where they continued to trade until the end of the century.

They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Edwards & Roberts specialised in Marquetry, inlay and Ormolu.
