Unusual Carved Oak Box Seat

19th century
Description

A beautiful quality quarter sawn oak Box Seat dating 1904, incorporating carved panels dating from 1612.

Inscribed to the interior with details and provenance.

"The Panels and all dark wood on this Box Seat are made from English chestnut and wrent wood (carved work) first used in a hunting box from The Old Court House, Gloucester, in the reign of James I - 1612.

The shields are military order of the Jacobean age and the squat faces on the arm seats represent happiness and grief. The Box seat was made of fine quality oak in 1904 by C Fowler of Gloucester"

The Box Seat is of wonderful colour and patination, in excellent original condition, constructed to the highest standard, beautifully presented - been waxed and cleaned using traditional restoration techniques and is now ready to be housed in its next home.
