The pierced brass strap-work corners of Portuguese colonial design , the interior of the lid with large decorative brass hinges and dome-studded exterior. Decorative studded decoration with pierced sheet brass panel designs. The ends fitted with carrying handles . Lacks key.

Chests of this type were produced throughout the C18th and C19th centuries by the countries of the Indian Ocean , taking their design influences from both Africa and the colonising and trading countries of Holland and Portugal . Often generically called 'Zanzibar' or 'Arab' chests.
