Superb Gillows Bon Heur Du Jour

19th century
Description

An attractive example of Gillows furniture making at it's finest. This 19th Century bon heur du jour was made using top quality burr walnut veneers with kingwood cross-banding and boxwood line inlay. The ormolu mounts are of top quality and retain their original gilding. The inverted breakfront superstructure has a three quarter cast gallery and 2 banks of 3 graduated drawers, the central panel with a good quality miniature painting of a Victorian lady holding a cat within an ormolu circular frame. When unlocked the panel lowers to reveal an interior of boxwood pigeon holes and also unlocks the 2 banks of drawers by an intricate locking mechanism (see photo). The base top with solid cross grain moulding, kingwood cross banding and shaped corners, having a replaced top quality hand dyed green leather writing surface with subtle gold and blind tooling. The front with 3 over 2 shaped drawers, the whole standing on wonderful cabriole legs with superb ormolu mounts to the knees. The shaped legs outlined with further kingwood cross banding and ormolu beading and original brass castors. The middle drawer stamped " GILLOWS 1218" and "GILLOWS & CO".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
