Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Pre-dating and the forerunner of French carriage clocks, this good clock by Robert & Courvoisier, features a fine convex enamel dial with eccentric winding holes; superb ormolu hands and is housed in its traditional ormolu-mounted case with snake (eternity) handle and cast brass 'toupee' feet.
It is in full working order ~ a rare and particularly fine 18th century French clock.
Captain Louis-Benjamin Robert (1732-1781) and Louis Courvoisier (1758-1832) entered into a partnership together in 1781, which following the death of Robert, was continued by his widow Charlotte.
