Description

EMILE LOUIS PICAULT: a large, impressive and fine quality gilded BRONZE SCULPTURE by this important French artist.

Inscribed: "Des Mysterieuses Profondeurs Elle Apporte a L'homme L'Etincelle Divine" (an elegant translation please anyone?*) it depicts a scantily-clad young woman, one arm held aloft, being transported by an eagle. Fully signed on the integral base; 24ins (61cms) high.

Emile Louis PICAULT, born 1833, was a French sculptor best known for his allegorical and patriotic subjects and also mythological heroes. He first exhibited in the Paris "Salons" in 1863, and died in 1915. (*The inscription vaguely translates: "The deep mysteries of Woman support the Divine Spark of Man")
