Signed and dated 1723 centre lower left and initialled 'J.A. 1762' on the stretcher. Original stretchers and the canvas unlined.

ROBERT DELLOW, (1696-1736) was a portrait painter very much influenced by Sir Godfrey Kneller, Principal Painter to the King.
Dellow was a subscriber to Kneller's Academy in 1711 and one of those who finished off Kneller's unfinished portraits after his death in 1723.

His signature is often read as 'Dellon' but he appears in St. John's College, Oxford accounts as 'Dellau'.
He is likely to be the Robert Dellow buried at St. Botolph's, Bishopgate, London.
