Portrait of a Lady 1723 by Robert Dellow.

18th century
Description

Oil canvas in later 18th century gilt frame.

Signed and dated 1723 centre lower left and initialled 'J.A. 1762' on the stretcher. Original stretchers and the canvas unlined.

The verso date of 1762 possibly being the date when the more fashionable frame was substitited for the original early 18th century one.

ROBERT DELLOW, (1696-1736) was a portrait painter very much influenced by Sir Godfrey Kneller, Principal Painter to the King.

Dellow was a subscriber to Kneller's Academy in 1711 and one of those who finished off Kneller's unfinished portraits after his death in 1723.

His signature is often read as 'Dellon' but he appears in St. John's College, Oxford accounts as 'Dellau'.

He is likely to be the Robert Dellow buried at St. Botolph's, Bishopgate, London.

SIZE: 30.25 x 25.25 inches canvas.
