Description

J.C.DE JONGH (?): An interesting and somewhat speculative OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS of a young lady, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and red velvet dress, whilst carrying a basket of fresh vegetables.

Possibly Dutch or Flemish, the canvas is in good condition, though there is some 'cracklature' to the bitumen-coated background. To the reverse is a stencilled catalogue number and an original label which states the painting was sold in a Christies auction in June 1887.

Clearly the painting is earlier than this, though the precise age in not known.
