Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1870s.

The interior of the box is lucky enough to have an English design registration diamond shaped lozenge which allows us to date the piece accurately, this one is for 1879, which ties in exactly to it's presentation as a gift in 1880.
The two cut crystal inkwells sit either side of the Cherub holding a letter.
At the top of this stand at the back is a C ring to hang a pocket watch when at home, this would then become a desk-top timepiece.

A quite magnificent box in excellent condition with a footprint measuring 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" and standing 7" tall to highest point.
