London Fine Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.

The lid top and forward facing panels are richly decorated in inlaid geometric form: A delicate feather-banded channel surround quatraform inlays of ebony, boxwood, holly and pear displaying exquisite detail and symmetry.

The central burr walnut panels repeat the inlay materials in hexagonal form around a mother-of-pearl cartouche to the lid and key escutcheon to the working lock on the front. Beneath the lock a secret jewellery drawer is hidden lined with silk and velvet.

The lid hinges to reveal a series of glass jars. To the rear sit five deep jars with alternating silvered and glass tops. To the fore a tray of oblong and shallow circular jars flank a central vanity panel which includes scissors and button & lace hooks. Lifting the tray reveals a hidden lower compartment.

Inside the lid a velvet backed mirror complete with gold embossed leather frame is disguised and upon release reveals a secret pocket for the ladies personal correspondence.
A truly wonderful object of virtue, this box spared little expense.
