Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dumbwaiter is a piece of tiered occasional furniture consisting of circular trays arranged vertically on a central support pillar. Developed in the 18th century, it was designed for dining rooms to hold side dishes, condiments, and wine, allowing guests to serve themselves without servants present.

19th-century dumbwaiters were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneer over oak and pine frames. Construction features dished or molded edge circular trays, hand-turned central columns, dovetail joints, and hand-cut brass castors or turned wooden feet.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age including original French polish patination, hand-turned timber elements, and dished tray borders carved from solid timber. Inspection of the undersides reveals original iron tie-rods, hand-carved tripod jointing, and period-appropriate wear to the base and feet.

A tiered dumbwaiter serves well as an occasional side table, plant stand, or bar tier in contemporary spaces. Positioned in a living room alcove or dining corner, the graduated trays can display curated ceramics, glassware, or books.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish twice a year following the timber grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement or cracking.
