16th Century Venetian Cedarwood Cassone or Marriage Chest

Description

A Rare and Stunning 16th Century Cedar Wood Cassone or Marriage Chest from northern Italy. The pieces are most often associated with Venice. The Serene Republic of Venice existed from 697 to 1797. The cassone was made in the middle of the Renaissance and during the middle of Elizabeth I reign for reference to the UK timeline.

The piece is made of cedar wood which was used to keep away moths and add fragrance to the clothes for hangings. It features a carved front depicting soldiers and maidens, the carving detailed with black penwork much of which is still clear. The top has a two tailed mermaid in pinwork and two framed designs with soldiers and maidens. The side panels also features large urns in penwork. The hinges and lock are original.

Cassone of this type were made as marriage gifts in northern Italy, the piece has great age and colour and given it was made in C1580 is in good overall condition. There is a framing piece missing from the top which is visible on the pictures. It has been missing for a long time and the top below has a wonderful shadow and patina.
