Mahogany Stick Barometer by Jacopi Salop

19th century
Description

A fine quality mahogany stick barometer.

The rectangular silvered brass scale is calibrated from 27" to 31" and features a sliding vernier with a brass pointer. The integral thermometer is calibrated from -10º to 120º Fahrenheit and is also engraved with the makers name, place of work and the typical weather indications used at this period.

The mahogany case has an exposed mercury tube, with a turned cistern cover to the base. The glazed access door is surmounted with an architectural pediment and a central brass finial. Both the access door and trunk of the case are inlaid with ebony and boxwood stringing.

Note: Jacopi of Salop is listed as working between 1800-1840. Salop being the old spelling of Shrewsbury in the county of Shropshire.
