J W Benson was a high end watch and clock maker who traded in London from 1847 to 1973. The company was an official watch maker to the Admiralty and the War Department and also held a number of Royal Warrants, including Warrants from Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia and several other royal families.

As well as producing their own watches, J W Benson also bought in quality movements for finishing and casing as was the case with this particular watch. It has a hand-winding movement, ref 216 with 15 jewels, which is ticking away nicely and the time keeping is good to within around two to three minutes over 24 hours.

The watch measures 35mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the articulated lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the screw-on case back for Birmingham, 1928 with a maker’s mark for the English watch case maker Aaron Dennison. The case is in good condition with just minor marks and some wear to the milled edge to the case back. The winding crown is a later replacement.

The watch glass is in lovely condition.

The enamel dial is signed J W Benson, London, Swiss Made. There are some hairline cracks but they are not too noticeable to the naked eye.

The watch has a vintage brown leather strap.
