Description

This rare and fabulous little wedding rug was made by a Turkmen tribe closely related to the Yomut. It has a beautiful aubergine field, a colour found in early examples of Central Asian weaving. The field is decorated with diagonal rows of small symbols - a pattern unusual on Turkmen rugs - more commonly found on trappings. The skirts are superbly decorated with bold and powerful stylised 'birds' - possibly the eagle.

In excellent condition, this rug would have been specifically made by the young bride for her wedding ceremony and possibly dates to around the middle 19th century.
