Certain scales were made for the British Government and this set incorporates a support to the back and front in the form of the Victoria Cross.
he VC was introduced on 29 January 1856 by Queen Victoria to honour acts of valour during the Crimean War.

The balance is marked S. Mordan & Co. and London, the right hand pan is engraved with the postal rates of it's day, this one, Victorian in era and dating to around 1880.
The weights sit in three caddies to the front. Superb quality and in excellent condition. The base measures 9" x 5" and stands 4 1/2" tall.
