Description

A most unusual English Victorian biscuit box or barrel, dating to around 1880. The box consists of a frame and the removable box which once removed resembles a large acorn. The frame with it's highly decorative swing handle is clearly Egyptian Revival in style with it's three figural Sphinx feet leading up to three Pharaohs heads.

The box is beautifully shaped and engraved, the lid at the front retaining the original armorial crest of an Eagle and crowned with a classical urn shaped finial. Once the lid is opened, the makers mark is revealed, I haven't managed to identify it as yet.

Excellent condition, the footprint measures approximately 5", the handle spans 9" at widest point; the lid diameter measures 6"; standing 10" to top of finial and 11" to top of handle.
