"The Eel Catcher": A wonderful Japanese Meiji BRONZE SCULPTURE, of exquisite quality and very fine detail.

The fisherman stands on a seaweed-strewn rock (burr wood) holding his rod aloft, with the eel that he has caught entwined around his left leg. The detail to the decoration to his jacket and basket is astonishing, and his expression is priceless! Fully signed with the artist and the foundry. 12ins high overall, the figure 8,.5ins (30.5; 21.5cms)

*During the early part of the Meiji period (1868-1912) the Samurai were banned from carrying swords, and the highly skilled traditional sword makers were suddenly out of work. Some turned to producing superb bronzes, full of detail and sometimes of humour, which are highly prized today.
