19th.c. Javanese Ceremonial Kris.

Description

Extraordinary 19th.c. Javanese ceremonial dagger or ‘Kris’. Wooden sheath with distinctive and charcteristic curving blade shape at the top and clad in a beautiful two piece chased silver case. Typical of the form the blade is of narrow asymmetrical wavy form (designed to increase the severity of wounds) with a remarkable Pamour pattern of water-like waves and ripples caused by the use of small amounts of nickel in the forging process. The hilt is superb featuring a pistol grip handle in ivory carved into a strikingly abstracted human figure in a squatting pose with arms folded across the chest. On a finely worked gold mount of concentric rings. Damage to the wooden sheath otherwise excellent condition.

As well as being a lethally effective weapon the Kris is traditionally regarded as a semi-sacred object imbued with a living spirit capable of magic, of bringing good or bad luck to its owner and of imparting bravery and heroism to the wearer. They are still worn as part of ceremonial dress in Indonesia and Bali. As objects of art, the kris is properly regarded in three pieces, the bilah (blade), hulu (hilt), and warangka (sheath) with each providing an opportunity for extraordinary levels of craftsmanship, often produced using precious materials. In 2005, Unesco gave the title ‘Masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity’ to the kris of Indonesia.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
