Jamaican Work Box Attributed to Ralph Turnbull

19th century
Description

A rare Jamaican work box, the lid with specimen wood cube marquetry, which opens to a lift-out tray with six lidded and 3 open compartments, 2 containing 4 ivory/bone sewing accessories. The lid interior with specimen star burst inlay and the box benefits from having the original brass lock, key and brass hinges

This very interesting work box is very similar to one we have previously owned which bore a label for Ralph Turnbull, Kingston, Jamaica. Ralph Turnbull, a Scottish immigrant is probably the best known maker although there were several other cabinet makers of repute in Jamaica during the early to mid 19th.C. Mostly famed for their exclusive use of exotic local timbers including bitterwood, logwood, wild olive, mountain cabbage, candlewood, coffee and prickly yellow. This particular box has accompanying hand written letters gifting it to a niece in 1937 and suggesting the box was made of timber from The Blue Mountains, Jamaica and made circa 1860. Size:- Width...12.5''...32cm. Depth...9.75''...24.5cm. Height...5''...12.75cm. Free delivery on this item to most of U.K.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
