John Howkins Antiques has dated this piece to the 1850s.

This very interesting work box is very similar to one we have previously owned which bore a label for Ralph Turnbull, Kingston, Jamaica. Ralph Turnbull, a Scottish immigrant is probably the best known maker although there were several other cabinet makers of repute in Jamaica during the early to mid 19th.C. Mostly famed for their exclusive use of exotic local timbers including bitterwood, logwood, wild olive, mountain cabbage, candlewood, coffee and prickly yellow. This particular box has accompanying hand written letters gifting it to a niece in 1937 and suggesting the box was made of timber from The Blue Mountains, Jamaica and made circa 1860.
