Mahogany Longcase Clock by Upjohn of Exeter

18th century
Description

An excellent example of provincial Clockmaking with elegant cabinet work and London associations.

The 8 day duration movement with a recoil anchor escapement and striking the hours on a bell. The dial is of the late 18th century silvered brass design featuring Roman numerals, Arabic minutes, seconds, date, blued steel hands and a strike/silent facility to the arch. Also elaborately engraved with swags, foliage, birds and the makers name and place of work.

The very elegant mahogany cabinet with a double plinth, a raised panel base and well chosen flame veneered mahogany to the long trunk door. The hood with reeded canted corners, a glazed access door with unusual convex mahogany veneer and a broken arch top.

Note: Thomas Upjohn was the eldest son of William and Anna and is listed as making some of Exeter’s finest clocks. He served his apprenticeship with his Father and then later moved to London. From the style of the case there is obvious an influence from two of the most famous Clockmakers of the time, John Holmes and Thomas Mudge. Its quite possible that Thomas Upjohn crossed paths with at least Thomas Mudge as he was originally born in Devon and retired to Plymouth in his later years.

Height: 7'1"
