C19th 'after the antique' Italian Neapolitan bronze fountain figure of seated fisherman. Well-cast 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze figure of a fisherman from the statue excavated at Pompeii in 1823. Discovered at the site of the "Casa Della Fontana Piccola" where it sat on the brink of the piscina of a shell and mosaic grotto, the sculpture depicts a seated study of a fisherman astride a rocky outcrop with a Bacchus mask fountain-spout beneath him . The figure has a verdegris 'faux excavation' aged patination , and was probably produced by 'Chiurazzi et Fils ' Foundry , Naples. The figure is shown bear-footed wearing a loose-fitting robe, his hands poised probably originally holding a fishing cane and a net, and a look of focussed concentration. Good incised detail to the hat , and the naturalistically-cast rock base with shell encrustation. The original now in the Museo Nazionale ,Naples. Excellent condition.
