Pristine Antique Red Leather Covered Light Box (Go-to-bed) C.1840

Description

A wonderful little leather covered Go-To-Bed in really superb condition considering it dates to around 1840.

The top has a gilded folding handle and the leather is gold embossed "Light". There is a brass button to the front which releases the sprung lid reveal the painted metal interior with a strike; this plate lifts to reveal a number of original little tapers which would have been used elsewhere.

A non-safety match would be lit and placed in the hole on top of the plate acting as a Go-To-Bed; known as this producing enough light to get upstairs to bed. (The matches shown (modern and can be replaced) cannot be shipped with the piece, but the tapers remain)

Excellent condition measuring 2" square x 3/4" tall.
