Large Shipowners' Model of a Cargo Vessel

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb quality, large and original SHIP'S MODEL of the cargo vessel: S. S. Mervyn, built by William Pickersgill & Sons of Southwick, Sunderland.

This finely detailed and wonderful quality model would have been presented to the owners of the (full-size) vessel when it was completed in 1908; such models are both rare and highly prized.

Complete in its glazed and superbly built mahogany case, it is beautifully built with a vast number of faithfully-produced brass fittings, including lifeboats; rails; companionways; ventilation shafts windlasses etc. etc. It measures 70ins (178cms) wide and 18ins (45.5cms) high.

*On February 20 1917, during the First World War, the "Mervyn" was on voyage from Port Talbot to Bordeau with a cargo of coal. She was involved in a collision at the approaches of the Channel, and sank some 20 miles south of Lands End.

Declaration

Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1900s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
