Antique Silver Police Minstrel Troupe Medals

1900 - 1920
Description

Two antique silver medals awarded for services to the Police Minstrel Troupe.

The Police Minstrels was a concert party consisting of members of the London Metropolitan Police. The Troupe was founded in 1872 by ten officers from "A" Division (Whitehall), and consisted of police officers who could sing or play a musical instrument. They performed at police stations to entertain the officers, and also gave public concerts in aid of police charities. The Minstrels wore evening dress and blackface makeup, in the manner of the typical minstrel shows of the period.

Both medals were awarded to W Parish, one for 10 years' service in May 1900 and the other for five years' service in December 1906. Both medals measure approximately 4.5cm x 4.5cm and they weigh 52.8g combined.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
