19th Century Japanese Carved Rare Large Fantasy French Overmantel Gabriel Viardot Dragon Mirror Miroir

19th century
Description

A stunning large Bevelled mirror attributed to Gabriel Viardot with a carved dragon draped around the mirror. It measures 45" by 33" wide and 10" deep.

Gabriel Viardot (1830 - 1906)

Parisian cabinet-maker, Gabriel Viardot inherited his family workshop.

He manufactured wooden sculpted furniture and was recognized as a clever specialist for his Chinese and Japanese furniture, in the spirit of eclecticism in vogue at the time.

His creations were free interpretations of oriental models, adapted to European 19th century taste, and often including animals, this theme being very appreciated since 1850.

In the second half of the 19th century, he developed a taste for fantastic visions, in which were included animals coming from old and remote worlds such as, dragons or salamanders.

Gabriel Viardot was famous for the fine quality and refinement of his pieces.

He provided mainly a clientèle of amateurs, aesthetes and collectors coming from the artistic circles (Monet, Debussy), the world of finance and high administration.
