Pair of Antique Victorian Inlaid Mother of Pearl Papier Mache Chairs

19th century
Description

This beautiful pair of antique Victorian papier mache chairs are in really good original condition & they were made by the famous makers Jennens & Bettridge. Their labels is on the underneath of each chair. They have cane the original cane seats. The decoration is still all there, with mother-of-pearl & lots of decorated paintwork. See all the information about the makers, etc., below.

Jennens & Bettridge, the firm run by Theodore Hyla Jennens and John Bettridge between 1816 and 1864, was famous for the range of papier mâché goods manufactured in its factory at 99 Constitution Hill, Birmingham, West Midlands. They also had premises at 6 Halkin Street West, Belgrave Square, London. The firm produced a range of products including writing boxes, trays, fans, and larger pieces of furniture such as chairs, tables and sofas.

Papier mâché was made by pasting layers of paper over moulds of the required shape, a job mainly done by women and girls. The object was then oiled and baked at very high temperatures. The shape of these chairs would have been finished by a cabinet-maker before they were varnished and dried in a stove. The mother-of-pearl was applied before the painted and gilt decoration, which was followed by a final coat of varnish, further stove drying and polishing.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
