Victorian Mourning Brooch with Hand Tinted Photo

Description

An exquisite mid Victorian mourning brooch.

The brooch measures 3.5cm wide and 4.5cm, plus the three drops. The brooch has a dove to the top; in the context of a mourning brooch, the dove represents the Christian Holy Ghost and is a common symbol found in jewels of the 18th and 19th century. A dove in flight, such as the one on this brooch, also symbolises faith.

The pearls are representative of tears, as are the three droplets at the bottom of the brooch.

The brooch has a hand tinted photograph with bevelled glass to protect it. To the back of the brooch, there is a receptacle with a hinged lid, designed to house a lock of hair, but it just has packing in it at the moment.

The brooch comes in an antique presentation box although not the original.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
