This example is in fine original condition and has been well looked after. The cabinet was never fitted with gurney's trade plate but is, without any doubt, by this famous and revered maker. The proportions, mouldings, choice of timbers, fine turned ebony knobs etc, will be familiar to all gurney aficionados. The original lock and key are there and working and all the glass is original and unchanged.
The drawers, which are solid mahogany, run smoothly on hidden bearer runners and the glazed frame drawer tops are satisfyingly closely fitted to protect the items displayed within. Originally designed to house a collection of british lycaenidae,('blues'), the drawer internals are quite shallow which makes this cabinet ideal for perhaps a collection of medals, badges,jewellery, etc. However, the possibilities are endless!
The honduras mahogany is beautifully and gracefully aged and well figured. Altogether a very desirable and versatile cabinet by the 'bentley' of 19th century cabinet makers.
