All four of the chairs are stamped Thonet to the underside and also retain their original paper label. Some damage to the seat pads, otherwise very good condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Michael Thonet is celebrated as a pioneer of both furniture design and manufacture. His invention of a technique for bending solid timber with steam enabled him to become the first industrialised producer of furniture of a mass scale. The firm’s key design principle was to manufacture as many chair models as possible from as few different parts as possible. These parts were then packed in boxes, for ease of shipping, and assembled elsewhere by the distributors or retailers. As well as the economies of scale which were achieved by the process it created an revolutionary simple and functionalist aesthetic much admired by the early modernist designers and still recognized as classic well over a century later.
