An impressive large antique Victorian Oil on Canvas of a Fisherman on a River Bank, inscribed on the reverse “Salmon Fishing, North Wales” and signed lower right H W HENLEY. In a later, very ornate gilt frame. With label to back from National Fine Arts Ltd with information about the painting and artist.

About The Artist

Henry W. Henley was born in 1865 and lived much of his life in and around Birmingham. His parents encouraged him in his artistic talent. His work influenced by the old masters and paintings he saw as a child in local art galleries. He was active in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. He specialised in landscape views of Wales and Scotland and his work is popular with collectors. He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists.

Condition report:

A small tear in canvass to lower right (see photo) along with a very small tear to lower middle. Craquelure and stretcher marks commensurate with age.
